Oh, San Diego. We love the way you love us! Lionfish Modern Coastal Cuisine is proud to announce that we were recently voted “Best Seafood Restaurant” by the Gaslamp Quarter Association. We are incredibly thankful for the appreciation and support…not to mention the many satisfied customers that have helped play a part in our receiving this incredible award!
To celebrate, we’re going to talk a little bit more about our restaurant’s philosophy and how we approach fresh coastal seafood a little differently than most. We’ll also dish on the amazing association which honored us, so that you can get a better feel for the unique community and neighborhood that is the Gaslamp Quarter!
Lionfish: Voted Best Seafood Restaurant by the GQA! Each year, the Gaslamp Quarter Association (AKA the “GQA”) sponsors the Lamplighter Awards, which are part of an annual gala. This year was a particularly significant ceremony: it was also the Gaslamp Quarter’s 150th Anniversary! The GQA pulled out all the stops, with a memorable evening featuring delectable cuisine, innovative libations, creative fundraising, and incredible live music set in the center of Fifth Avenue.
Under a magical fairyland of twinkling lights, hanging florals, and whimsical gilded carrots and rabbits, an incredible three course meal was served with wine and craft beer pairings as the sun set and gave way to stars. It’s not just every day that the bustling streets of the Gaslamp Quarter are closed off for such a celebration, so it was truly a night to remember!
As part of the gala, neighborhood award winners were announced and released. When the
2017 Lamplighter Award Winners were announced, we were delighted to learn that Lionfish had been voted best seafood restaurant!
Perhaps Chef Jose “JoJo” Ruiz puts it best: “This is an incredible honor for myself and my team. With so many fantastic seafood options in San Diego, we couldn’t be happier to have won this award. Look forward to Lionfish continuing to innovate and push the boundaries of sustainable, local seafood dishes for our diners.”

Lionfish Modern Coastal Cuisine: a little different. In Southern California, “Coastal Cuisine” isn’t a trend; it is a way of life. The incredible bounty of fresh catches daily from the Pacific Ocean make creating fresh, bright, vibrant cuisine easy and accessible in this beautiful part of the world.
At Lionfish, perhaps our not-so-secret approach is to start simple. We begin by employing the freshest, best, and highest quality raw ingredients. From there, our chefs approach the ingredients with reverence, striving to maintain the simplicity of the flavors yet always adding a creative twist.
Take, for example, our Pan Roasted Swordfish. To make this entree, freshly caught swordfish is pan-roasted simply, then served with creative fixings that really enhance the flavor, including chanterelles, smoked carrot, puffed quinoa, and saffron butter. Or consider our Roasted Icelandic Una Salmon, which is served with crispy artichokes, farrotto, herb asparagus sauce, and sorrel. In each and every dish we serve, we strive to balance simplicity and innovation in one delicious package.

Lionfish: a beautiful place to enjoy great cuisine. At Lionfish, we are serious about creating great cuisine. But we also understand that the food isn’t the only part of a great dining experience.
Located in the sleek, beautifully designed Pendry San Diego, Lionfish is a design-driven hotspot which reflects its bustling setting, not only in the Pendry but in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter’s main drag, 5th Avenue. A lively, yet elegant environment within the two-level space, Lionfish is not only a culinary destination, but it’s also a home for hand-crafted cocktails, all of which are carefully prepared by high-end mixologists in the restaurant’s lively bar.
About the Gaslamp Quarter. To put it simply: the Gaslamp Quarter is where it’s at. Largely considered one of the West Coast’s premier entertainment districts, there’s something for everyone in the Quarter. In its 16 ½ block span, you’ll find incredible Victorian architecture, oodles of history, world class restaurants, nightclubs, and plenty of unique entertainment options. Walkable to and from Downtown San Diego and in close proximity to the Convention Center, Petco Park, and Horton Plaza, it’s an accessible destination by mass transit as well. Once you’ve had a chance to visit the Gaslamp Quarter, you won’t soon forget this unique area!
About the Gaslamp Quarter Association: The Gaslamp Quarter Association is a non-profit association of merchants, comprised of more than 400 businesses located within the Gaslamp Quarter. The GQA is one of the oldest business improvement associations in the city of San Diego, having been established in January of 1982. The group is contracted by the city, and their responsibilities include managing and promoting the Gaslamp Quarter, which is a designated National Historic District.
The board behind the GQA works tirelessly to promote the Gaslamp Quarter as “San Diego’s premier dining, shopping, and nightlife destination through community and media relations, special event production, management and growth of the Gaslamp Quarter digital footprint, and coordination various promotional programs, member workshops, and forums for the benefit of our vibrant community.”
With a group as dedicated to the neighborhood as the GQA, it’s especially humbling to be called out in the Lamplighter Awards! To be honored by the people who know the neighborhood best is truly a beautiful thing. We are incredibly thankful for the honor of “Best Seafood Restaurant” which they have bestowed upon us!
